30 : Discovering a Lost Asterix
Film - "Two Romans in Gaul"
|
Asterix NZ is proud to feature
a new article on a little known Asterix film
from 1967 " Deux romains
en Gaule" or "Two Romans in
Gaul". A film so little known, that I myself
didn't know about it until a few days ago! The
Lost Asterix Films page now contains the
most comprehensive guide to this forgotten film
on the internet as well as rare video footage.
|
|
| Here's the introduction
for the new article: |
The year is 1967AD. France is entirely
conquered by the comic book Asterix. Well,
not entirely
Asterix's adventures have
done phenomenally well in print, but some
are calling for a live-action Asterix film.
On 25 February a one-hour black and white
film debuts on French Television. Asterix
and Obelix are not the heroes of this film
but two Roman Legionaries "Ticketbus"
and "Prospectus". However, the film
is hugely significant in the history of Asterix
in that it is set in the world of the Asterix
comics, is written by Rene Goscinny, features
cameos by Goscinny and Uderzo and most importantly:
it contains possibly the first animated screen
appearance by Asterix and Obelix.
So why then do so few Asterix
fans know of its existence?

Find out more about this lost
Asterix film here. The page has also been updated
with rare images from the abandoned animated Asterix
and the Golden Sickle, and a bonus television advertisement
featuring Asterix and Obelix.

23 : First five minutes of Asterix
at the Olympic Games film can be viewed online! |
|
The Orange Asterix at the Olympic Games Film website
allows you to view the opening five minutes of the movie
online (and in French). Here's a description of the
footage:
|
The first shot is a map of Gaul,
very much like the classic map we all know from
the beginning of each Asterix story. The Roman
eagle staff falls down, creating a crack in the
map where it lands. We see a hand holding a magnifying
glass come into the picture, and the camera zooms
through to reveal Asterix's village surrounded
by the fortified camps. It continues zooming through
to a house in the village, but as the door opens
instead of Asterix or Obelix walking out, we meet
the new character Alafolix/Lovestorix (Stéphane
Rousseau). He holds a dove that he lets go and
it rapidly flies into the distance. With Cacofonix's
tree hut in the background he holds out a Greek
coin with the head of Princess Irina (Vanessa
Hessler) whom he loves. Alafolix leaves the village.
There are several helicopter shots of the Gaulish
countryside as the credits role. We see a montage
of Alafolix going on his journey - getting knocked
into the river by a passing Roman horse rider,
Alafolix sheltering from a thunderstorm in the
cave (that is already occupied!) and getting chased
by bees. After a very nice graphic of "Asterix
aux jeux Olympiques" we now see the dove
coming to the end of its journey and approaching
the Greek palace where Irina lives. Irina takes
Alafolix's love scroll from the dove's pouch and
unwinds it - its as long as a toilet roll! She
reads.

In other Asterix at the Olympic Games film related
news, the official movie poster has been released
(see right) and an english subtitled version of
the teaser trailer is now displayed on my Olympic
Games film page. I have also added an editorial
which asks "Will the Olympics win the games?"
- anaylsing what we know so far about the film
and whether it will succesfully transfer the spirit
of the book to the screen.
The Atari
UK wesbite is also allowing you to download
a PC trial version of the Olympic Games game (unfortunately,
I've been unable to download it yet).

28: Obelix makes cameo on "South
Park" episode! |
|
Obelix makes a brief appearance in a recent episode
of the american adult cartoon series "South Park"!
In episode 165 "Imaginationland Episode III"
Obelix features along with many other cartoon characters
including Bugs Bunny, Captain Planet, Charlie Brown
and Spiderman. Obelix blows a horn before the "big
battle" between good and bad imaginary characters.
He is sporting his trademark red moustache and pigtails,
although the stripes of his breeches are red.

The episode first aired on October 31st 2007. Thanks
to Stephan for notifying me and I apologise for the
lateness of this putting this up. You can check out
the Wikipedia entry for the episode here
and you can even watch the episode legally here.
But South Park is not the only recent american cartoon
show to reference Asterix! Maik has posted on
the AsterIX Forums
that in the recent The Simpson's episode "Husbands
and Knives" the Asterix comic book series gets
mentioned by name! He reports Lisa says: "Asterix!
Tintin! I heard these only existed in hight school french
clases!" This was episode no.407 and first aired
November 18, 2007
|
Its great to see these American shows including
references to Asterix, particularily since he
is relatively obscure in the US!
The most notable reference to Asterix in an english
TV Show had been in the Mr Bean Episode "GOOD
Night, Mr Bean" (episode 13, first aired
31 October 1995) in which Bean and Teddy read
Asterix and the Laurel Wreath together in bed,
and Bean chuckles often.
