Plot

"Why not infiltrate the little Gaulish village by building a modern housing estate? That's the plan thought up by trendy Roman architect Squaronthehypotenus to help Caesar crush the indomitable Gauls. Will the villagers be tempted by the chance of making money when the first Roman tenants move in? And what about the Gaul's secret weapon? Roll up to see the Roman remains!"

  • About: Squareonthehypotenus is a promising up-and-coming young architect, already famous for his drive-in amphitheater among others, is commissioned by Julius Caesar to build a "The Mansions of the Gods" around the Gaulish village. Despite numerous setbacks, he doesn't like to admit defeat, meaning regular jobs for his doctor!

  • What it means: Flaturtha (gas in the stomach or intestines) or flat earther
  • About: Flaturtha is the leader of the slaves that the Romans "employed" to build the block of flats. When the slaves are given Magic Potion by the Gauls and they rebel, he issues a list of demands - "Paid holidays, overtime, the gradual phasing out of the whip, a ban on chains and decent accommodation". Very smart this one!

Review

Goscinny and Uderzo set their sights on property development in one of the funniest Asterix books.

Satire of the best kind!
