Uderzo dedicates Asterix and the Black
Gold especially to Rene Goscinny (who had died in 1977)
on the inside page - "a Rene". In the
book, Asterix and Obelix travel to Israel. Rene was
Jewish, but did not think it was appropiate for him
to write an Asterix book set in Israel as (according
to Uderzo) "he feared he would be accused of
writing Jewish propoganda". Uderzo says this
is the "one adventure that was easier for me
to write than for him".
As well as the dedication, Uderzo also
pays tribute to Goscinny by having him appear as the
Bedouin character Saul Ben Ephisal, who guides Asterix
and Obelix to the edge of the desert.
Albert Uderzo went to Israel especially
to do research for the book, and has produced some quite
magnificent artwork as a result.

Plot
|
|
"The Druid is running short
of rock oil - an essential ingrediant in the magic potion
which gives the Gaulish villagers superhuman strength to fight
Julius Caesar's Roman legions. But the Phoenician merchant
Ekonomikrisis has forgotten the druid's order, and Asterix
and Obelix set off to prospect for black gold in the Middle
Eastern desert. Their mission is complicated by the Roman
secret agent Dubbelosix and his amazing folding chariot, which
is equipped with all the latest spy gadgets. Will the two
old friends strike gold or will they have to return home empty-handed?"

About : A member of Caesar's
secret service, he took six druidical examinations before
being made a Druid (thus the name). He accompanies Asterix
and Obelix to try and make sure their mission to get
rock oil fails, as it would be only then that Getafix
would tell him the secret recipe of the Magic Potion.
He is very atractive to female... female flies that
is!
