December 23 : First five minutes of Asterix at the Olympic Games film can be viewed online!

The Orange Asterix at the Olympic Games Film website allows you to view the opening five minutes of the movie online (and in French). Here's a description of the footage:

The first shot is a map of Gaul, very much like the classic map we all know from the beginning of each Asterix story. The Roman eagle staff falls down, creating a crack in the map where it lands. We see a hand holding a magnifying glass come into the picture, and the camera zooms through to reveal Asterix's village surrounded by the fortified camps. It continues zooming through to a house in the village, but as the door opens instead of Asterix or Obelix walking out, we meet the new character Alafolix/Lovestorix (Stéphane Rousseau). He holds a dove that he lets go and it rapidly flies into the distance. With Cacofonix's tree hut in the background he holds out a Greek coin with the head of Princess Irina (Vanessa Hessler) whom he loves. Alafolix leaves the village. There are several helicopter shots of the Gaulish countryside as the credits role. We see a montage of Alafolix going on his journey - getting knocked into the river by a passing Roman horse rider, Alafolix sheltering from a thunderstorm in the cave (that is already occupied!) and getting chased by bees. After a very nice graphic of "Asterix aux jeux Olympiques" we now see the dove coming to the end of its journey and approaching the Greek palace where Irina lives. Irina takes Alafolix's love scroll from the dove's pouch and unwinds it - its as long as a toilet roll! She reads.

To view this for yourself, go to the official site then click "Video Exclusives" then "Les Debut dus film!".

In other Asterix at the Olympic Games film related news, the official movie poster has been released (see right) and an english subtitled version of the teaser trailer is now displayed on my Olympic Games film page. I have also added an editorial which asks "Will the Olympics win the games?" - anaylsing what we know so far about the film and whether it will succesfully transfer the spirit of the book to the screen.

The Atari UK wesbite is also allowing you to download a PC trial version of the Olympic Games game (unfortunately, I've been unable to download it yet).

November 28: Obelix makes cameo on "South Park" episode!

Obelix makes a brief appearance in a recent episode of the american adult cartoon series "South Park"!

In episode 165 "Imaginationland Episode III" Obelix features along with many other cartoon characters including Bugs Bunny, Captain Planet, Charlie Brown and Spiderman. Obelix blows a horn before the "big battle" between good and bad imaginary characters. He is sporting his trademark red moustache and pigtails, although the stripes of his breeches are red.

Obelix in South Park

The episode first aired on October 31st 2007. Thanks to Stephan for notifying me and I apologise for the lateness of this putting this up. You can check out the Wikipedia entry for the episode here and you can even watch the episode legally here.

But South Park is not the only recent american cartoon show to reference Asterix! Maik has posted on the AsterIX Forums that in the recent The Simpson's episode "Husbands and Knives" the Asterix comic book series gets mentioned by name! He reports Lisa says: "Asterix! Tintin! I heard these only existed in hight school french clases!" This was episode no.407 and first aired November 18, 2007

Its great to see these American shows including references to Asterix, particularily since he is relatively obscure in the US!

The most notable reference to Asterix in an english TV Show had been in the Mr Bean Episode "GOOD Night, Mr Bean" (episode 13, first aired 31 October 1995) in which Bean and Teddy read Asterix and the Laurel Wreath together in bed, and Bean chuckles often.

October 27: Cover Images released for the new Omnibus and Olympic Games film books!

Handsome covers from the upcoming releases of the two New Asterix Omnibus editions and the Asterix at the Olympic Games book of the film have appeared on Amazon.co.uk's website:

Asterix at the Olympic Games: The Tie-in Album Asterix Omnibus 1: Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and the Golden Sickle, Asterix and the Goths
Asterix Omnibus 2: Asterix and The Actress, Asterix and the Class Act, Asterix and the Falling Sky

Its unconfirmed, but I am hoping that the collected Omnibus editions will be in the "Grand Collection" format with recolouring and 20% larger pages. Interestingly, while Amazon UK lists the second Omnibus release as, well, "Asterix Omnibus 2", the Orion Publishers website list it as Asterix Omnibus 11, giving hope they will release the enter 33 Asterix books in this 3-books-in-one format.

Ironically, the cover for the first Asterix Omnibus (containing the first 3 Asterix stories) depicts Asterix holding Dogmatix. Dogmatix of course wasn't introduced until Asterix and the Banquet - the fifth book in the series!

You can preorder these books from Amazon.co.uk:

In other Asterix news...

Albert Uderzo has given a fascinating interview with the BBC, read The Vitalstatistics of Asterix.. Some interesting points to come out of it:

  • Uderzo reaffirms his intention to create another Asterix story. However, he admits he's still looking for an idea
  • Asterix is called "Asterix" not because he is the star (*) but it would mean the series would appear first in an encyclopedia of comics!

It also contains a preview of a special Asterix at the Olympic Games cover (see right) Uderzo is working on depicting a triumphant Asterix on a podium holding a Laurel Wreath with Caesar indignantly walking off.

UPDATE: The finished special edition cover can now be viewed here.

July 19: Asterix at the Olympic Games Announcements! The Movie Book to be released in English and a GAME is being released by Atari!

Its an Olympic Games themed news day with an announcement of an Asterix at the Olympic Games Game from Atari to be released on PlayStation®2, Nintendo DS™, Wii and PC and also the discovery of an Asterix at the Olympic Games movie book to be released in English!

Another new Asterix album has very quietly appeared on Amazon.co.uk's Asterix book list. This time its Asterix at the Olympic Games Book of the Film. We knew that this movie book to complement the release of the latest live-action film was to be coming out in other langauges, it was unknown whether we would see an English release. The film tie in for Asterix and Obelix take on Caesar was never released in English for instance.

The German cover of the film book. Its likely to be the same in english.

Asterix at the Olympic Games (Film tie-in) will be released by Orion on 31 Jan 2008. It will be 64 pages long.

Here's the description: "When Asterix and the Gauls enter into the Olympic Games in Athens, they find themselves up against it as the magic potion is banned as an artificial stimulant. Will they be able to win without it?And what tricks are their rivals up to to ensure that nothing goes right for them? This entirely new book is the perfect companion to the film, using a combination of stills and plot highlights, as well as behing the scenes information about the making of the film, to ensure that the reader can enjoy the world of Asterix in an entirely new way.

More than 330 million copies of Asterix books have been sold all around the world, and the series has been translated into over 100 languages Asterix at the Olympic Games has the biggest budget of any Asterix movie ever filmed, over 78 million Euros, and stars Gerard Depardieu, featuring guest cameos from David Beckham, Michael Schumacher, Zinedine Zidane and wrestler Nathan Jones Publication coincides with the European release date The last Asterix film tie-in, Asterix and the Vikings, has sold 20,000 copies so far in hardback"

You can preorder the book from Amazon.co.uk here.

As for Asterix at the Olympic Games: The Game, Atari has come out with a press release. It will be for the PlayStation®2, Nintendo DS™, Wii and PC formats and is scheduled for release early in 2008. It "blends live action elements from the film with high quality computer generated and video game animation to deliver fans an extraordinary and unique Asterix experience".

Here's the Synopsis: "Developed by Etranges Libellules in close collaboration with Asterix licensor Les Editions Albert René and with film production company La Petite Reine, the game follows Asterix, Obelix and the faithful Dogmatix as they travel to Greece in aid of their lovesick friend Alafolix. Their journey takes them to the Olympic Games where they find themselves pitted against the athletic might of the Roman Empire. Adventure and hilarity ensue as Asterix and friends compete to get the better of Brutus, his muscle-bound champion, and their long-time nemesis, Julius Caesar himself.

In Asterix at the Olympic Games players can choose from three playable characters, Asterix, Obelix and Dogmatix, in an original story which takes a parallel course to the film and the comic book. Our heroes must stop Brutus who has opened the gates between the worlds of the book, the film and the game while still finding time and energy to triumph at the Olympic Games themselves. The mini-game mode lets players compete in Olympic challenges with their chosen character, while two-player multiplayer lets friends go head to head in a series of hilarious contests." Link

In another Asterix movie related news, I have finally seen Asterix and the Vikings and have now considerably updated the film's webpage and added my review here.

July 1: The untold story of Asterix's early publication in English is revealed!
: I am very excited to present Asterix in Britian: The Untold Story (or how Asterix crossed the channel and was published in english) This is an exclusive article about the early publishing history of the Asterix books in english. The original editor Antony Kamm has very graciously provided me with an article he wrote and allowed me to interview him. Fascinating reading!

June 25: Many new products added at the Asterix Store

Lots of new Asterix products have been added to the Asterix Store in the Other Asterix products category. There are some very nice 3D Lenticular purses, postcards, and magnets, as well as Asterix posters and toys. And lets not forget this very stylish Asterix T-Shirt on the left. Check them out here.

Plus! A new (or should I say old?) fanfiction story illustrated in comic book style has been added to the fanfiction section.

June 22: Asterix and the Cleopatra mistaken mistake corrected by original editor
A mistake I incorrectly blamed on the english translators in Asterix and Cleopatra has been corrected with a fascinating anecdote by none other than the original english Asterix editor! 23 June: Some new Asterix and the Roman Agent mistakes have been added with the help of David!
June: Asterix at the Olympic Games Movie teaser trailer released
An Asterix at the Olympic Games teaser trailer has been released! It doesn't feature Asterix or Obelix, but instead features Caesar's adopted son Brutus (Benoît Poelvoorde) attempting to command the Roman Army. View it at my Asterix at the Olympic Games film page!
June: Asterix labelled a "a Gaulish vision which ignores the intercultural reality of French society"
The french division of Defence for Children International has been kicking up quite a stink about the use of Asterix and Obelix in illustrating a The United Nations convention on the Rights of Children. They claim Asterix is "archaic...hierarchical", at odds with "revolutionary" values of the 1989 convention, projects "a Gaulish vision which ignores the intercultural reality of French society" and is "a eulogy to tribal, hierarchical, society with frequent references to a chief". Ouch. You can read a good article and discussion about the issue here.

19 December 06: Asterix and the Vikings book in NZ + other recent news

Still no sign of the latest Asterix cartoon movie "Asterix and the Vikings" raiding New Zealand beaches. Just as we have not seen nothing of the two live-action movies Take on Caesar and Mission Cleopatra, it is unlikely that we will see this movie in New Zealand cinemas, or even on Region 4 DVD.

So we probably won't be able to watch the film, but we can READ the book. I had been keeping my eye out for Asterix and the Vikings: The Book of the Film and finally found it in Paper Plus (which is usually well stocked with Asterix books) - its a beautifully illustrated book!

Most bookshops have at least some of the Asterix books in softcover (hardcover however is scarce). Whitcoulls and Borders both stock a great box-set of 7 Asterix DVDs (Gaul, Cleopatra, Twelve Tasks, Britain, Vs Caesar, Big Fight, Conquers America).

Other news from the world of Asterix in the past months:

The Asterix Refoundation

The 33 Asterix books are getting re-released as part of a "Grand Collection". The pages will be 20% bigger, contain 8 more pages, and every single panel from the entire range of books will be recoloured, relettered etc. Albert Uderzo has even drawn new covers for Asterix the Gaul and Asterix and the Golden Sickle for the occasion!

The Asterix Refoundation

BUT... There is no word if Orion, the english Asterix publishers, will also publish these brand new editions. Bizarely, we had a recent re-release with the 2004 Reeditions which recoloured the first 8 books and issued the rest of the series with new covers. There were many technical problems with these reeditions (see here). The publishers of the Grand collection seem to want to get their new versions perfect, releasing only 8 new titles a year until 2009. Unfortunately for us, it probably wouldn't make good financial sense for Orion to also republish the Asterix books after the high profile 2004-2005 re-release with booksellers still carrying ample stock.

After another 6 months I have been able to update the website! There has been a major update to the Asterix Mistakes section with many more mistakes found by site readers and added!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

11 July : Asterix NZ back in action!

After a very busy half year, I am finally in a position to begin updating Asterix NZ on a more regular basis. Look for updates over the next two weeks.

For now, the two movie pages Asterix and the Vikings and Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games have been updated with all the latest news and information.

Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games Casting Update!

Most interestingly, Action Star Jean Claude Van Damme who was reported to be starring as the major character of Glutues Maximus in Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games, now seems to be out (if indeed he was ever in). Fiming has started with French K1 Champion Jerome Le Banner in this role.

More info on this, and other casting information can be found here.

1 January : Asterix NZ re-design!

I was tired of the old, dark site design so I have spent my time re-designing the site and completing updates - producing a brighter, better-looking and more informative presentation for a new year.

As well as the obvious colour scheme and graphics change, you may be interested in the following updates:

Previous Asterix NZ colour scheme

With this major overhaul there are bound to be some problems needing fixing, and if you do find some I'd appreciate you emailing me!

News from 2005:
4 November: New Asterix cast in Olympic Games movie!
Clovis Cornillac

With Christian Clavier not returning for the 3rd Live Action Asterix Movie "Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games", it has been announced that Clovis Cornillac will be taking over the title role.

Clovis Cornillac is a star in France, appearing in many of their big budget films including 'Les chevaliers du ciel' in which he plays a Military pilot.

Meanwhile, Gerard Depardieu who plays Obelix in the movies, has announced "I'm in the process of stopping filming". Olympic Games, which he can't get out of because of contract reasons, will possibly be one of his last films.

You can find out more about "Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games" here.

14 October : Asterix 33: "Asterix and the Falling Sky" out today!

The latest Asterix book - Asterix and the Falling Sky is released today in 27 countries and 15 languages.

The book is supposed "to set a benchmark for Gaul" and I have heard some interesting rumours about the book, but its probably best to read the book first.

New Zealand fans are going to have to wait, the book is on order and will becoming to New Zealand, but none of the bookstores I talked to where able to tell me when. The best bet for NZ fans to get it as soon as possible (and what I'm doing!) is to order it online.

22 September : Asterix 33: "Asterix and the Falling Sky" launched
Asterix and the Falling Sky

Albert Uderzo officially launched the 33 Asterix album in Brussels today - Asterix and the Falling Sky .

Uderzo revealed it wouldn't be his last book: "I enjoy what I'm doing despite my age and as long as I can find a good idea I will make another album". Although he does admit it is difficult to continue coming with ideas and health is an issue - he is having problems with his hands.

To find out more on the book, check out my Next Asterix book page.

18 July : Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra on DVD

Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra has been dubbed into English and released today on Region 2 DVD. The 2002 French movie was based on the book Asterix and Cleopatra and starred Christian Clavier (Asterix), Gerad Depardieu (Obelix) and Monica Bellunci (Cleopatra). The DVD allows you to view the movie in French and English, and has a "Making of" documentary.

DVD's of the cartoon Asterix films Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and Cleopatra, The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, Asterix in Britain, Asterix vs Caesar and Asterix and the Big Fight will follow on August 15th. Asterix and Obelix take on Caesar is also available on DVD.

13 June : Parc Asterix doing better than Euro Disney

IOL has a very interesting article about how France's Asterix theme park "Parc Asterix" is in profit and doing far better than its American competitior Euro Disney which is in debt, despite the 13 million visitors per year.

Once again the Gauls have defeated the invaders! Hit the link for more.

8 June : Jean-Claude Van Damme in Olympic Games movie

Editions Albert Rene have given producer Thomas Langmann the all clear to film Asterix at the Olympic Games as the third Asterix movie.

French action film star Jean-Claude Van Damme will star, playing the Roman Legionary Gluteus Maximus, who represents Rome at the Games.

Other casting news reported:

  • Indian Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai is also in the cast. No news about who she'd play as there are no main female characters in the book. It is possibly they have written a new part in the movie for her.
  • Benoît Poelvoorde also has a role in the film. Although not confirmed, he would be most likely to play the Roman Centurion Gaius Veriambitius. UPDATE 16/6: The Star has reported that he will play Brutus.

Thomas Langmann was unsure about whether this Uderzo and Goscinny's daughter Anne would allow the project, as they had rejected a sequel based on Asterix in Spain, and apparently disliked the last movie Mission Cleopatra. They however accepted Langmann's Olympic Games proposal, but retain power over the project, including the script and casting.

Langmann hopes to start filming from March 2006 in Tunisia and Morocco for French release in early 2007.

18 May: New live-action Olympic Games movie?

Variety.com has reported that the son of Asterix Producer Claude Berri, Thomas Langmann, has come up with a new script for a live-action Asterix movie based on Asterix at the Olympic Games. Berri had hoped to make a third Asterix movie two years ago (based on Asterix in Spain) but the right holders of Asterix rejected the idea because they apparently weren't happy with the script.

Langmann and Berri are still waiting for an okay by the Albert-Rene, but hope the movie can start production next year with Frederic Forestier as the director. No doubt they would hope this to be released in 2008, to coincide with China's Olympic Games.

15 April: Goscinny and Uderzo in Eisner Hall of Fame?

Our favourite comic book team of Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo were given the Hall of Fame award in the 2005 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Also awarded in this category was Golden Age artist Lou Fine.

You can find out more about these awards here.

UPDATE : Marko writes that the final decision has not yet been reached. It seems that it will be either Goscinny and Uderzo or Lou Fine. Will tell you the outcome when we get it.

9 February: Bad news for the Movie book reprintings

If you take a look at the What does 2005 hold in store for Asterix? news item below you would see that revised editions of the books of the films The Twelve Tasks of Asterix, Asterix vs Caesar, Asterix Conquers America and Operation Getafix were to be released in the middle of this year.

Unfortunately, Amazon.co.uk has updated these listings to show that they will not be released until the middle of 2006. At least it gives me time for my bank account to recover after buying all the other books!

3rd February : How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion to be reprinted

The latest Asterix Missive, in wrapping up english news, has stated that the book "How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion when he was a little boy" will be re-released by Orion. It is not drawn in comic form but has full page illustrations. No date has yet been given as to when it will be out.

For those that haven't read it, it is quite an interesting book and features the characters as children! Well worth the the read.

How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion when he was a little boy

The missive also announced that 800,000 english language Asterix books were sold last year. Very impressive! The great thing to come out of the revised editions was that so many new people got the chance to discover Asterix!

20 January: What does the year 2005 hold in store for Asterix?

This year will certainly be a year that all Asterix fans will remember, with many great events being held.

The most of important will be the release of the 33rd Asterix Adventure on the 14 October, but while you are waiting for that, here are some other important events in the life of Asterix in 2005, including Asterix and the Vikings trailers and completely new english audiobooks!:

There are also some other events with out a definite time frame:

  • It is the 60th anniversary of the start of Albert Uderzo's career. That is indeed something to celebrate, so according to the latest Asterix Missive, he "will supervise a whole series of sculptures, silkscreen printings or other limited edition objects, with only 33 to 60 copies of each item, produced by the very best craftsmen!" Sounds very good, but very expensive. Better start saving now if you want to be in with the chance!
  • Prior to Asterix 33 being released, some stores will display a portrait gallery collection of Asterix and his friends.
  • Ferrero will be releasing some new Asterix figures in their Kinder Surprise eggs. Look for these on ebay.com
