Mistakes: Asterix the Gaul

Asterix the Gaul

General Mistakes
Take a look at the handle of these cauldrons. It would be impossible to pick these up in the real world. Luckily they live in a comic book world eh?
Getafix's Cauldron Getafix's Cauldron
At page 41 we see Centurion Crismus Bonus' beard tied up in three knots and then in the very next panel it is tied in four knots. On the following page the beard goes back to three knots.
pg26 panel 2
The number of planks of wood the cart is made out of keeps changing (varies from 8 - 3). Eg. p26 panel 2 and panel 6.
panel 6

The 2004 revised edition of Asterix the Gaul has a rather unforgivable spelling mistake. On page, panel 1 it looks like Getafix's old age gets the better of him when he calls Asterix "AsteriNx". Somehow I don't think the series would have been so popular if that was his actual name!

This mispelling doesn't appear in any of my older Asterix the Gaul editions. Thanks Joseph for pointing this out!

Historical Inaccuracies
Musical Chairs
The Romans didn't invent Musical Chairs - it was the Victorians! This is would be an intentional mistake - a troungue in cheek reference to the modern world.

Continuity Issues
There are a few continuity issues in this book, which is to be expected, seeing as Gosicnny and Uderzo didn't have long to make this - the first Asterix book - in time for the first issue of "Pilote." And weren't sure what they wanted to happen later in the series.
On the first page of the book, we see Obelix holding an irregular shaped menhir and an axe. This is the first and only times we see him with the weapon or a menhir like that. This was due to Goscinny and Uderzo changing their minds, fearing that it made Obelix to warlike, however they did not have time to go back and make changes.
Asterix and Obelix
Getafix's Cave

After Asterix and Obelix go check up on Getafix the Druid he invites them back to his home. Curiously, he brings them to a cave outside of the village. We never see or hear of the cave again in subsequent books and is replaced by a hut inside the village. This odity occured because Goscinny and Uderzo weren't completely sure what they wanted for future books and ideas change.

Or if, you want an "Asterix World" explanation, he probably moved into the hut inside the village because the chances of the Romans raiding the cave was too great.

"In the first album, Caesar has a long pointed nose (p 1) and a vertical broken nose at the end. In fact, it looks there were two Caesars. Uderzo explained that it was because he 'worked too fast in those days'." - Bernard
