Mistakes: Asterix and the Class Act

Continuity
The short stories contained in Asterix and the Class Act pose some continuity issues as you shall see:

The Young Vitalstatistix?
Young Vitalstatistix
In How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion when he was a boy, Vitalstatistix is portrayed as a young chief (without his girth) and Asterix and Obelix are just boys... but in the the short story of Asterix and Obelix's birth in Asterix and the Class Act, Vitalstatistix is just a kid. Is it that he has aged 19 years instead of six in the period between the time the stories were set?
Young Vitalstatistix
Possible Explanation: Goscinny wrote the story a long time before Uderzo illustrated it and Uderzo had simply other ideas about Vitalstatistix since the time Goscinny wrote it.

The Invisible Phan has the folowing to say on the matter....

"Note that he was a thin and unmajestic warrior at the defeat at Alesia ("Chieftain's Shield") but THAT occurred in 52 BC -- which is why "all Gaul is occupied" at the time the stories begin (50BC). But V was (as noted) a young CHIEF when Obelix fell into the potion ... (Possible solution? Since "How Obelix .." is told *by Asterix* in the first person rather than an omniscient narrator, possibly he *means* V's father ... *shrug* It would work a little better that way)"

Max also thinks he has the answer...

Age chart: 'Asterix's Birth'

Vitalstatistix: 8

Unhygenix, Fulliautomatix, Cacaofonix, Shield Bearers, Etc.: 4-6

Asterix, Obelix: Just Born or 0

Age chart: 'How Obelix Fell Into the Magic Potion when He Was a Little Boy'

Vitalstatistix: 14

Unhygenix, Fulliautomatix, Cacaofonix, Shield Bearers, Etc.: 10-12

Asterix, Obelix: 6

This would give Vitalstatistix just enough time to grow a moustache and you can see that adolescent lengthliness about him. If you follow this age chart everything seems to fit into place. Besides, in 'Asterix's Birth' all the other well known villagers are already about the age that Asterix and Obelix are in "How Obelix, Etc." This chart makes perfect sense and follows both stories."

Chitrak points out a further problem "Notice that Vitalstatistix is on The Chieftains Shield in "how obelix fell". That means how obelix fell has to have happened after Alesia. Vitalstatistix was 14 when he went to war? Possible."

Birthday Blues
The Birth of Asterix

In 'The Birth of Asterix', Asterix and Obelix are born on the day same day. Yet in Obelix and Co, Obelix celebrates his birthday by himself and no mention is made that it is Asterix's birthday.

This issue is covered in more detail in the Asterix and the Actress mistakes, with possible explanations and anaylsis.

Who is the village teacher?

Getafix Village TeacherCacofonix Village Teacher

It is established way back in the 2nd Asterix book, Asterix and the Golden Sickle (1962) that Cacofonix is the village teacher in a panel on the first page. This idea was continued in the 29th Asterix book Asterix and the Secret Weapon (1992) that Cacofonix is the village teacher and he is removed from that position by the mothers of the village.

However, in the story "Asterix and the Class Act" (1966) it is Getafix, not Cacofonix, who is taking the children.

It is worth noting that in How Obelix fell into the Magic Potion when he was a boy (written in 1965), Getafix is the teacher.

Possible Explanation: Both Cacofonix and Getafix take turns teaching the children, but it is not made clear.

Entering the Olympic Games
The Lutetian Olympics

In Asterix at the Olympic Games, a major plot point is that the Games are "reserved exclusively for Greeks - free Hellenic citizens. The only outsiders allowed are Romans." Because Gaul was now part of the Roman Empire, they are allowed to compete for the first time.

This means the athelete "Pierre Decoubertix" talked about in "The Lutetian Olympics", could not have entered 100 years ago.

Colouring

Aideen points out: "In Asterix and the Class Act on page 10, panel 4, the shield bearer on the left's trousers are brown. But in the next panel they have changed to white!!"
